Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 68 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Sunday morning 08 September 2024.

Congratulations Miss Hibiscus Fiji – Melania Tora!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy and 22 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning!

In Rugby Union: In the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, Japan 41-24 USA in Kumagaya earlier today, to take the top spot in Pool B with Fiji top of Pool A.

And in The Rugby Championship: South Africa came from behind to win their fourth successive Test against the All Blacks 12-18 this morning, to remain unbeaten in The Rugby Championship.

Yet again as the contest progressed, so the Springboks grew into the game, lowered their error count and benefited once again from the incredible depth they have off the bench with Kwagga Smith and try scorer Malcolm Marx making a thundering impact in the second half.

While the All Blacks, trailing 12-13 at the 70-minute mark, effectively lost the Test on two key plays:
·       Damian McKenzie had a relatively easy penalty kick at goal, which he inexplicably missed.
·       Shortly afterwards, Tyrel Lomax’s indiscipline cost a penalty and a yellow card.

Games over.

In Santa Fe, Argentina, Los Pumas crushed the Wallabies this morning; inflicting a record 27-67 loss.

In Rugby League: The Titans held a shock 6-4 lead at halftime after outplaying the three-time reigning premiers in the opening 40 minutes at Penrith Park.

But the Panthers rallied to beat the Gold Coast Titans 12-18 last night to secure a home qualifying final for the fifth year in a row.

However, what was obvious is - Penrith need Nathan Cleary back if they’re to have any chance of winning a record fourth straight NRL premiership.

In SportsBiz: It’s been six years since Nike parted ways with tennis icon Roger Federer.

And while Nike has a massive portfolio of some of the biggest stars in every sport, Mike Nakajima, the former tennis director of Nike, is quoted in the 2023 book “The Roger Federer Effect” saying, “That should never have happened. For us to let somebody like that go, it’s an atrocity.”

That looks more and more correct as Federer continues to shine in retirement – by far the biggest star in New York this week.

Nike blew it.

In UFC: The UFC's inaugural and longest reigning Flyweight Champion, widely considered to be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time – Demetrious Johnson has retired at 38.

After beating Joseph Benavidez in the final of the 2012 UFC Flyweight tournament, Demetrious went on to reign supreme over the 125lb division for 2,142 days.

Along the way, he broke records for:
·       the most consecutive UFC title defences (11),
·       the most submissions in UFC title fights (5) and
·       the longest winning streak in UFC flyweight history (13).

In the Paralympics in Paris: At the same stadium where his wife, Tara Davis-Woodhall won Olympic gold just three weeks ago, American “blade runner”, Hunter Woodhall surged to an emotional first career Paralympic gold medal in the Men's 400M T62.

Finally, at the US Open Tennis at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows: In the Women’s final, American Jessica Pegula went down fighting 7-5, 7-5 to World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus in front of a star-studded sold out partisan crowd in New York.

American hope, Taylor Fritz plays World number one Jannik Sinner in the Men’s final tomorrow.

As Swiftees would say – “Go Taylor Go!”
