Naas, the king of the Ammonites died and so David sent comforters to his son. However, his advisors cautioned him these men were sent to spy out the land, so he humiliated them, sent them back and hired mercenaries who arrayed themselves in battle against Israel. Joab, his brother, and David then humiliated and subjugated the armies that came against them. And Syria refused to fight against Israel afterwards.
