It's time to talk fair lending with one of the premier leaders in the space Mr. Tory Haggerty! He and I met at a banking conference in SD back in 2019. You remember 2019 right? Ha ha! The good ol' days!

In this episode, Tory shares his unique origin story, breaks down the importance of banks embracing fair lending in an effort to eliminate discrimination in it's lending practice, how he launched his company Tuscan Club Consulting & Tuscan Club University, balancing family and business, and even his personal endeavor involving Major League Baseball stadiums!


ABOUT TORY:

Tory Haggerty grew up on small town South Dakota and joined the active duty Air Force right out of high school. After 4 years, he left active duty to join the South Dakota Air National Guard and get his Bachelor’s degree in communication studies at South Dakota State University. He then attended the University of South Dakota to earn an MBA. He started his banking career as a compliance examiner with the FDIC where he worked on nearly 100 bank exams in the next 6 years.

He left federal employment and worked for three different regional and national banks before finally deciding to start his own consulting company in 2017. Like many small businesses, he started with himself, a laptop, and a vision. His company is now 4.5 years old, has 5 employees, and has worked with 50 different lenders around the country. In 2019, Tory attended the Graduate School of Banking program in Colorado. That is where his idea of the fair lending school was born. He spent nearly a year writing the fair lending manual and filming videos for the school. He also created the nation’s first professional certification, the Fair Lending Expert (FLE), specifically designed for fair lending professionals.

Launched during the height of COVID in 2020, the fair lending school has certified nearly 100 compliance and audit professionals around the country. To further his goal of combating and hopefully eliminating discrimination in the lending industry, he wrote the first ever book on fair lending. His book “Unfair Lending: Why discrimination in banking still exists and how to prevent it” was released on June 1, 2022. Through his fair lending school, book, and audits, Tory continues his goal to spread education across the nation on how to prevent and eliminate discrimination in the lending industry.

Tory was promoted to an officer in the South Dakota Air National Guard in 2013 and retired in 2020 with over 20 years of military service. He currently resides in South Dakota with his wife and children.
