Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor was a giant of 19th century Torah learning. His halachic rulings in aguna cases, and beyond remain widely cited, and he was a staple of Russian-Jewish politics of his day. His careful and judiscious dealings with the Russian Government, with Zionism, and with the Maskilim of the Jewish Enlightenement reveal a politically astute and charismatic leader who understood and adapted to the many changes of his age.
