The sculptural fragment with Gorgon was recovered in 1960 at a country home being demolished, by the master Rondano Dondini. It was preserved until 2013 at the primary school of Montaletto. Following conservative restoration managed by the restorers of the Superintendence, it was placed inside the museum.
In the upper portion, it depicts a Gorgoneion, namely an image of Medusa’s head. In funerary monuments, it is a symbol of the defence of the tomb from the ill-intentioned. In the lateral portion of the stone fragment, there is a figure of a bird of prey, perhaps an eagle. The fragment could be part of a funerary monument of the Roman period.
