Agosto 24: No te conviertas en un Diótrefes

3 Juan 1:1‭-‬15 RVA2015:
El anciano al muy amado Gayo, a quien amo en verdad. Amado, mi oración es que seas prosperado en todas las cosas y que tengas salud, así como prospera tu alma. Pues me gocé mucho cuando venían hermanos y daban testimonio de tu verdad, es decir, de cómo andas en la verdad. No tengo mayor gozo que el de oír que mis hijos andan en la verdad. Amado, fielmente procedes en todo lo que haces a favor de los hermanos, y más aún cuando son forasteros. En presencia de la iglesia ellos han dado testimonio de tu amor. Si los encaminas como es digno de Dios, harás bien; porque partieron por amor del Nombre sin tomar nada de los gentiles. Por lo tanto, nosotros debemos sostener a los tales para que seamos colaboradores en la verdad. He escrito a la iglesia; pero Diótrefes, quien ambiciona ser el primero entre ellos, no nos admite. Por esta causa, si voy allá, haré recordar las obras que hace y cómo nos denigra con palabras maliciosas. No satisfecho con esto, él mismo no admite a los hermanos; además, impide a los que los quieren recibir y los expulsa de la iglesia. Amado, no imites lo que es malo sino lo que es bueno. El que hace lo bueno procede de Dios, pero el que hace lo malo no ha visto a Dios. Se ha dado buen testimonio acerca de Demetrio de parte de todos y aun por la misma verdad. También nosotros damos testimonio, y ustedes saben que nuestro testimonio es veraz. Tenía muchas cosas que escribirte, pero no quiero hacerlo por medio de tinta y pluma. Más bien, espero verte dentro de poco, y hablaremos cara a cara. La paz sea contigo. Los amigos te saludan. Saluda tú a los amigos, a cada uno por nombre.


Esta corta carta dividida en 15 versos es una carta simple pero muy interesante porque nos muestra como el apóstol lidiaba con situaciones que se presentaban en la iglesia cristiana de los primeros cristianos.
El apóstol se dirige a Gayo, posiblemente un líder en la iglesia con una posición económica estable y que Dios lo usaba para poder ayudar a muchos hermanos que estaban sufriendo persecución por causa de ser seguidores de Jesucristo.
También el apóstol advierte sobre un tal Diótrefes, que era un líder de la iglesia, que se había transformado en un abusador de su liderazgo, para controlar a los hermanos y no ayudar a los que llegaban con necesidades. Es más, era tan atrevido, que hablaba mal del apóstol Juan. ¿Puedes creer eso? Sorprendentemente, este individuo llegó al punto de menospreciar a uno de los últimos apóstoles que caminaron con Jesucristo y le sirvieron hasta el final. Diótrefes pasaba por alto que Juan fue uno de los 12 apóstoles que Jesús dejó como guías y columnas de la iglesia para formar a los líderes de la iglesia del Señor. Juan era como un padre espiritual para muchos y muy respetado pero Diótrefes, en su arrogancia y ambición de poder, opacaba la imagen de Juan para él ser la cabeza de las iglesias en esa área.
El apóstol Juan, con su espíritu de mansedumbre y lleno de amor de Dios, le advierte a Gayo que no se vaya a convertir como ese líder, que guarde su corazón; también le escribe que está listo para visitarlos y confrontar a este hombre que estaba aprovechando su posición de liderazgo para manipular y dañar a la iglesia, cerrándose las puertas a los más necesitados y rechazando el apostolado de Juan.
Guardemos nuestro corazón de envidia, egoísmo y altivez. No podemos decir que conocemos al Justo si hacemos injusticia.

Quiero cerrar este devocional con las palabras del apóstol Juan: “Amados Hogares de Pacto, mi oración es que sean prosperados en todo y que tengan salud así como prosperan sus almas.”

August 24: Do not become a Diotrephes

3 John 1:1-15:
The Elder, to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well, because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.
I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.
Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true.
I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink; but I hope to see you shortly, and we shall speak face to face.

This short letter divided into 15 verses is a simple but very interesting letter because it shows us how the apostle dealt with situations that were presented in the Christian church of the first Christians.
The apostle addresses Gaius, possibly a leader in the church with a stable financial position and that God used to help many brothers who were suffering persecution because of being followers of Jesus Christ.
The apostle also warns about a certain Diotrephes, who was a church leader, who had become an abuser of his leadership, to control the brothers and not help those who came in need. What's more, he was so daring that he spoke ill of the apostle John. Can you believe that? Surprisingly, this individual went to the point of disparaging one of the last apostles who walked with Jesus Christ and served him to the end. Diotrephes overlooked that John was one of the 12 apostles that Jesus left as guides and pillars of the church to form the leaders of the Lord's church. John was like a spiritual father to many and highly respected but Diotrephes, in his arrogance and ambition for power, overshadowed the image of John for him to be the head of the churches in that area.
The apostle John, with his spirit of meekness and full of God's love, warns Gaius not to become like that leader, to guard his heart; he also writes that he is ready to visit them and confront this man who was taking advantage of his leadership position to manipulate and damage the church, closing the doors to those most in need and rejecting the apostolate of John.
Let us guard our hearts from envy, selfishness and haughtiness. We cannot say that we know the Just if we do injustice.

I want to close this devotional with the words of the apostle John: "Beloved Covenant Homes, my prayer is that you may be prosperous in everything and have health just as your souls prosper."
