There are many ways to understand a patient, but none of them takes into account the fact that we will never understand our patient. We might have an idea of what the patient is thinking and feeling. Still, all nursing theorists are talking about understanding the patient, wherein this episode we will go into the philosophized Mikhail Bakhtin who is saying that we will never understand our patient, but we can minimize the misunderstanding.

Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin was a Russian philosopher, literary critic and scholar who worked on literary theory, ethics, and the philosophy of language. His writings, on a variety of subjects, inspired scholars working in several different traditions (Marxism, semiotics, structuralism, religious criticism) and disciplines as diverse as literary criticism, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and psychology. Although Bakhtin was active in the debates on aesthetics and literature that took place in the Soviet Union in the 1920s, his distinctive position did not become well known until Russian scholars in the 1960s rediscovered him.
