Podcast 74:
The first Picture is a picture of Beirut before the explosion. The second is a picture of the explosion in Beirut.
Lebanon has been plagued by corruption and self serving politicians for years. Since their Civil War ended in the early 90’s there has been a rotating roster of corruption and the people have paid the price for it. Inflation of their currency has crippled things, COVID-19 hits to make it worse, then this explosion happens because a large deposit of ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) was left unchecked for years.
This happened 20 days ago and the toll is this, 220 lives lost and 300,000 homes destroyed. What has the government done? The Lebanese Prime Minister and his cabinet resigned but the President won’t relinquish his power. Is he part of the problem too.
Something for us to take into consideration is that things like this can happen when self serving politicians and corruption are allowed to thrive. We need to keep our own politicians in check and vote out any that have been there too long and have done nothing.
