In this episode we continue studying the Book of Genesis. In this episode Jacob notices that Laban and his sons' attitudes have changed toward him.

They said all the glory that Jacob had he got from their father.

The AHLB says, the Hebrew word for glory means heavy of weight, wealth, or importance, honorable, to prevail.

In the world’s eyes riches make a person important and worthy of honor, they are the heavy weights in the world.

But God says, if we are going to glory it should not be in wealth and riches but we should glory in the fact that we know and understand him. Here's the text:

Jeremiah 9:23  Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

Jeremiah 9:24  But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

We also wonder why Laban and his sons were offended by Jacob's wealth. Especially since Laban said, he learned by experience, that he had become wealthy due to God blessing the works of Jacob’s hands.

Jacob and his sons at this point should be extremely wealthy, at least they should have more than Jacob, because he started off at the bottom.

Where was their wealth? It’s possible they squandered their wealth. Even Rachel and Leah said in verse 13 that their Father devoured their money.

Proverbs chapter 21 verse 20 says, the wise have treasures in their houses but foolish people spend all their money.

Here's the text:

Proverbs 21:20  There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

It’s also possible they were not good shepherds, so their flocks did not increase as they should have. We were told when Jacob arrived in Haran, that the shepherds had the sheep out in the field, in the noon day sun, the hottest part of the day.

Their sheep, were at the well panting for water but they were waiting for “they” to roll away the stone, yet, Jacob rolled away the stone by himself when he saw Rachel coming.

This may be a picture of Christ, who see’s his bride coming, she’s leading his flock to the well of living water, He will roll the stone away so they can be refreshed.

But what about the poor flocks under the care of the lazy or careless shepherds. Those shepherds are unaware of the time, the sheep need to be under the shade, under the wings of the shadow of the almighty but instead they are out in the noon day sun, near a well with a lid on it that they refuse to move. They don't have access to living water. And will probably become prey for hungry, savage wolves.

These are the blind guides Jesus spoke about in Matthew chapter 15, Apparently Jesus said something that offended the Pharisees and the disciples said don’t you know you offended Pharisees by your saying, Jesus said let them alone they are blind leaders of the blind and they will both fall into the ditch, meaning the leaders and their followers will fall into the pit of hell.

Noice, Jesus said, leave them alone, it's up to the followers to turn away from blind leaders who are not teaching the whole counsel of God, less they miss out on heaven.

Jacob is a picture of Christ, who rolled away the stone that covered the well of living water, that is the word of God, now Rachel's sheep will be refreshed, they are under his care, they will increase and multiply and they will be multicolored sheep, she will lead people from every tongue, tribe, and nation to living water.
