BRAHMACHARYA - 19. WET DREAMS & SPERMATORRHOEA - Sri Swami Sivanda - The Practice of Celibacy - HQ Full Book.

This chapter addresses a subject that has caused distress to many young men: wet dreams, nocturnal emissions, and spermatorrhoea. These conditions are often misunderstood, leading to physical, emotional, and spiritual despair. Through a compassionate and practical approach, the chapter provides insights into their causes, consequences, and effective remedies grounded in ancient wisdom and modern understanding.

The Pervasiveness of the Problem
Wet dreams, or nocturnal emissions, and spermatorrhoea have adversely affected countless young men. Spermatorrhoea, in particular, has been described as a "dire disease," robbing promising youth of their vitality, focus, and ambition. Many, once bright and hopeful students, find themselves physically weakened and emotionally despondent due to this condition. A significant factor exacerbating the issue is the increasing exposure to vulgar and sexually provocative media. From explicit literature to obscene films, such influences prey upon impressionable minds, igniting impure thoughts that contribute to the loss of vital energy. This depletion leaves young men vulnerable to fear, shame, and a sense of hopelessness. Yet, as this chapter reassures, there is no cause for despair. With discipline, correct understanding, and spiritual practices, recovery and transformation are entirely possible.

Understanding Wet Dreams and Spermatorrhoea
The chapter distinguishes between two types of nocturnal emissions: physiological pollution and pathological pollution.
  • Physiological Pollution: This is a natural phenomenon, a periodic cleansing of the seminal reservoir. Such occurrences are harmless and unaccompanied by sexual thoughts. The individual wakes feeling refreshed and need not be alarmed.
  • Pathological Pollution: This condition involves frequent emissions accompanied by sexual dreams and impure thoughts. It can lead to symptoms such as:
    • Depression and irritability
    • Physical weakness and memory loss
    • Pain in the back, headaches, and burning sensations during urination
    • Severe fatigue and diminished ability to concentrate
Understanding this distinction is crucial for addressing the issue without unnecessary fear.

Causes of Wet Dreams and Spermatorrhoea
Several factors contribute to these conditions, including:
  1. Dietary Habits: Overeating, consuming spicy or stimulating foods, and indulging in aphrodisiac substances can agitate the body's internal systems, leading to emissions.
  2. Impure Thoughts: Lustful fantasies and exposure to provocative imagery directly impact mental and physical health.
  3. Physical Factors: Constipation, a loaded bladder, or excessive walking can exert pressure on the seminal organs, triggering involuntary discharges.
  4. Lifestyle Choices: Poor sleep habits, lack of physical activity, and indulgence in self-abuse deplete vitality and worsen the condition.

Consequences of Neglect
Unchecked nocturnal emissions and spermatorrhoea have far-reaching consequences. They not only sap physical energy but also undermine confidence, willpower, and mental clarity. Without intervention, they can lead to spiritual stagnation, preventing individuals from achieving their higher purpose.

Practical Remedies and Preventative Measures
The chapter offers a holistic approach to overcoming these challenges, blending practical advice with spiritual disciplines.
  1. Dietary Discipline:
    • Avoid spicy, pungent, and stimulating foods such as garlic, onions, chilies, and chutneys.
    • Adopt a light evening meal before 7 p.m., preferably milk and fruits.
    • Abstain from smoking, alcohol, tea, and coffee.
  2. Proper Evacuation:
    • Address constipation through natural means like enemas rather than laxatives.
    • Empty the bladder before bedtime and upon the first urge at night.
  3. Physical Practices:
    • Regular exercises such as Sirsasana, Sarvangasana, and pranayama strengthen the body and mind.
    • Cold hip baths and spinal douches invigorate the nervous system and reduce emissions.
  4. Mental and Emotional Regulation:
    • Avoid anger, hatred, and negative emotions, as they deplete energy and weaken resolve.
    • Cultivate a positive and disciplined mental attitude to reduce lustful thoughts.
  5. Spiritual Practices:
    • Meditate and chant mantras such as "Om" or "Punarmamaitu Indriyam" to purify the mind.
    • Perform Suryanamaskara and offer prayers to the Sun for vitality and strength.
    • Engage in regular scriptural study and devotional activities to elevate the mind.
  6. Lifestyle Adjustments:
    • Sleep on a coarse bed or mat, preferably on the left side, to minimize emissions.
    • Wear a loincloth or Langoti to maintain Brahmacharya and prevent involuntary stimulation.
    • Maintain a schedule that includes waking up before 4 a.m. for meditation and physical activity.
  7. Avoid Harmful Influences:
    • Shun provocative media, bad company, and unnecessary interactions with the opposite sex.
    • Cultivate chastity in thoughts, words, and actions, viewing all as divine embodiments.

The Power of Yoga and Self-Mastery
Yoga is presented as the ultimate remedy for spermatorrhoea and related conditions. It empowers individuals to harness their inner energy, transcending physical and mental limitations. Practices such as Mula Bandha and Uddiyana Bandha, combined with deep breathing and meditation, help redirect vital energy toward spiritual pursuits.

Transforming Despair into Strength
The chapter emphasizes that despair is unwarranted. Even those with long-standing afflictions can recover through sustained effort and faith. By replacing impure thoughts with divine contemplation and engaging in meaningful work, individuals can reclaim their vitality and purpose.
  1. Reframe the Mindset: View the condition as a temporary challenge, not a defining characteristic.
  2. Embrace Devotion: Develop unwavering faith in God, surrendering all worries and seeking His grace.
  3. Draw Inspiration: Study the lives of celibates like Hanuman and Bhishma to strengthen resolve.
The Path to Supreme Bliss
Ultimately, the chapter calls for a life rooted in purity, discipline, and devotion. By mastering desires and aligning with spiritual principles, individuals can overcome the challenges of wet dreams and spermatorrhoea. This transformation not only restores physical health but also paves the way for spiritual awakening and supreme bliss. The journey may require patience and perseverance, but the rewards—health, strength, and divine realization—are well worth the effort.
