Reddit thread titled "Calcium Carbide Lamp. Old miners were tough!" discusses the history and use of calcium carbide lamps in mining and caving. The thread highlights the lamps' advantages over early electric lamps, such as their brightness, longevity, and ease of refueling. However, the lamps also presented inherent dangers, including the potential for explosion and acetylene gas leaks. The discussion focuses on the transition from carbide lamps to more modern LED alternatives and how miners still value the old technology for its unique light quality and ruggedness.
