But when doctors told him he had five years to live due to cancer, he had to spring into action to beat the clock and get on a show that often takes a decade or more of effort to achieve. His resulting triumph formed the basis of the book and documentary "Dying to Do Letterman," which is basically "Rocky" for standups.
