Limestone plays a significant role in the carbon cycle. When limestone is formed, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is absorbed by rainwater and reacts with calcium carbonate in the rock to form calcium bicarbonate, which then washes into the ocean. Over time, marine organisms use this calcium bicarbonate to build their shells and skeletons. When these organisms die, their remains accumulate on the ocean floor and eventually form limestone rock. This process helps to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the Earth's crust. However, global atmospheric CO2 continues to increase as shown in the graphs from the Mauna Loa observatory and the South Pole.
