The book follows the fortunes of Jennie Follett, a New York artist’s model, and Teddy, her brother. After their father’s dismissal from his lowly position in the bank and his subsequent death, the family struggles financially. In desperation, Teddy steals money from the bank where he also works, with disastrous consequences.
