It's really interesting to consider how the so-called modern approach to the analysis of the human being as a whole has origins in the past.
In particular the medieval philosophy and physiology interpreted the individual as an interaction of four humours, connected to different elements that rule the man as well as they rule the earth. Forces and spirits (fluids) are the reason of the temperaments and an imbalance among the elements in the individual microcosm has got its reaction in the macrocosm of the universe.
This isn't just a new way to interpret literary characters and to approach philosophy, but it is also an alchemic metaphor to overcome the dualism mind-body of the last century, associating this reinterpretation with new medical perspectives and ancient pantheistic and animistic religions.
