We begin our discussion of Ivan Illich’s Shadow Work. In the second chapter of the book, Illich focuses on the standardization of language in the late Renaissance as a means to expand the power of the State, contrasting it with the flourishing of vernacular communications that naturally occur in free human societies. Is control over language the first step toward the top-down institutionalization of virtue development that is the mark of the modern state?
