Show Notes
This week on the Harmony with Food Podcast, I discussed how your gut health and microbiome contribute to weight loss resistance.
Do you feel like you've tried everything to lose weight? I see clients all the time who are working out regularly, and have tried intermittent fasting, Weight Watchers, etc., and still can't get their weight to budge. If that sounds familiar to you, don't fear! We can get to the bottom of of what's going on.
One Size Does Not Fit All
I am a firm believer that one size does not fit all, which is why I am an anti-diet dietician. Differences in genetic prenatal experience, health history, lifestyle, nutrient intake, biochemistry metabolism, and our microbiome all contribute to individualized differences observed in response to therapeutic diets, nutrition, and nutrition status.
Even the timing of eating, stress responses, chemicals in our food, and use of household products called obesegens can all make a difference in our health.
This is why I have the Bio Unique Boutique. The testing done in the Bio Unique Boutique can help me better understand your individualized biochemistry, how your body metabolizes food, and what nutrition strategies will work best for you.
Gut Health & Weight Loss Resistance
Inflammatory Foods
We all know that certain foods like sugar, fast food, etc. can cause inflammation in the body, but did you know that even some quote-on-quote "healthy foods" can cause inflammation when they aren't right for your body? This inflammation can make it harder to lose weight. Food intolerance and microbiome testing can help us get a better picture of which foods these may be.
Medications
Prescription medications can often affect your digestion and alter your microbiome and micronutrient absorption. Even if you've had antibiotics just one time in your life, they can lead to developing leaky gut. If you are on prescription medications, I strongly recommend getting microbiome or micronutrient testing!
Weight Loss and the Microbiome
Weight loss has less to do with willpower and more to do with a balance of good to bad bacteria in your gut, which are the bacteria in your gut that control blood sugar, cravings, insulin, how many of the calories you eat that get stored as fat, etc.
Modern life is full of toxins that hurt your gut bacteria, antibiotics, stress, and environmental pollutants that decimate good bacteria. These can create an imbalance of bad bacteria to good bacteria and lead you to store more fat than usual.
Microbiome Testing
The Gut Zoomer gets a full picture of the different bacteria in your gut so we can see how many different types of bacteria you have and the balance of good to bad. Once we have that information, we can start changing your diet and supplements to rebalance your gut. Then, you can start losing weight, improve your digestion, and gain more energy. If you're interested in the testing, head to this page and set up a call with me so I can help you figure out which test is best for you.
