It's easy to be generous with people that we love, but what about those people that get under our skin? Can we be generous in our assumptions about their behaviors and intentions? To do that we have to set good boundaries so that we can come from a place of integrity. In this episode, I share a few passages from "Rising Strong" by Dr. Brené Brown. We also explore real life examples about how we can build empathy for others while protecting ourselves.

LOVE this talk! When my kids were young, my own boundaries were not what they should have been, so I was basically clueless in teaching my kids healthy boundaries, unfortunately. However, when it came to teaching compassion, I was all about that. One example comes to mind...when my son was in first grade, he was being picked on by one of his fellow classmates. I knew all of the students in the class because I was also the teacher's assistant in the class. I had mentioned to my son that maybe this boy didn't live in a household where he felt loved or listened to or maybe he wasn't treated well...we just don't know. But I also explained that when people aren't are stuggling in their home life, sometimes they act out and treat others with frustration because they're hurting. At Christmas time, when the teacher asked the class how many needed to make two cards because one or the other parent wasn't living at home, so many hands went up - I was blown away at how many broken homes there were. It broke my heart. One of the children raising their hand was the boy that was bothering my son. So I had another conversation with son regarding this. Thankfully, my son got this and has grown up to be a loving, compassionate man. He seems to have figured out the boundaries part all on his own, thankfully. Thank you again, Jen, for such a thought provoking subject.
