È questo un celebre canto natalizio derivato dalla poesia For Christmas Day, scritta nel 1739 dal presbitero inglese Charles Wesley (1707 – 1788), fondatore del Movimento Metodista.Il brano è associato alla melodia del Festgesang an die Künstler, del 1840, creata dal compositore tedesco Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847).Nel 1855, il musicista britannico William H. Cummings elaborò l’odierna versione musicale, adattando la composizione di F. Mendelssohn.Unitamente alla sua larga diffusione in ambiente religioso, «Hark! The herald angels sing» è famoso per essere stato parte della colonna sonora dei film Via col vento (1939), La vita è meravigliosa (1946) e A Christmas Carol (2009), oltre che ad essere la canzone che chiude il film di avventura-fantasy Jumanji.Il testo, che riportiamo nell’originale inglese e nella traduzione italiana, è un invito ad accogliere il Canto degli Angeli e a dare “Gloria al Re neonato”, Gesù.Composizione in tre strofe, si propone come un vero Inno di lode, denso di elementi teologici e cristologici, con il quale salutare il Natale del Figlio di Dio.
