Questions like this may seem simple, but they have stymied scientists and philosophers for centuries. From what we mean by “universe,” most people think of the things we can see — stars, galaxies, everything between that. But there is a limit to what we can observe. Light from the most distant galaxies has traveled billions of years to reach us, but the light has not had time to arrive beyond a certain distance. That’s the edge of our observable universe, the portion we can study. But what’s beyond that edge? Is there more? Or is there... nothing?
