A Maryland abortion doctor is now in the spotlight of a Congressional investigation because of a significant number of women who have been rushed to the hospital from his clinics.

That's not the only reason late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart is suddenly under a bright spotlight.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee Select Investigative Panel has issued nine subpoenas after they discovered a significant rise in the number of women being rushed to hospitals from Carhart's Germantown, Maryland, clinic.

Six women were taken from clinics where Carhart performed abortions in an emergency state during a four-month period. In a 15-day period between March 20 and April 4, 2016, three women were rushed away via ambulance from Carhart's Maryland clinic.

While the number of women who have needed emergency medical treatment following botched abortions is bad enough, there is now suspicion that Carhart has actually been covering up various crimes by performing late-term abortions.

Bre Payton of The Federalist told USA Radio News that many underage girls being brought to Carhart for late term abortions are victims of abuse.

"Especially underage girls," Payton said. "These kind of procedures are often used to cover up sexual abuse. The individual inflicting this abuse upon [the girl] will often use abortion as a way to cover up the evidence of this kind of long term abuse."

Payton said the abuse includes everything from sexual assault to incest.

The investigation is also going to examine how the clinic responds to babies that are born alive and viable after a botched abortion procedure. The late stages of the abortions means the babies could be viable after they are brought out of their mother.

Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn issued a strongly-worded statement that showed the resolve of the investigative committee.

“We have an obligation to protect the most vulnerable at all stages of life,” Blackburn (R-TN) said. “This obligation was expressed in both the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act and the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act. Reports regarding the Germantown clinic are deeply troubling, both for the sake of babies whose lives are ended so close to—and possibly even after—birth and for the sake of the women who have been rushed from that clinic to the hospital with increasing frequency. In order to properly address these concerns, we have issued subpoenas not only to Dr. Carhart and his clinic, but also to hospitals and first responders who may have information that will be instructive. Time is of the essence.”
