According to Stephanie Maria Peña, a psychotherapist hailing from Brooklyn, New York, "Cuffing season occurs as soon as the weather gets colder and single folks are extra motivated to meet someone." This yearning is largely attributed to the plummeting temperatures and the impending holiday festivities, which beckon people to find a partner to cuddle with by the fireplace, share a kiss at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, or bring along to the office Christmas party.
The exact origins of the term "cuffing" remain shrouded in mystery. Some suggest it may have sprung from African American slang as a verb for "hooking up," while others propose that college newspapers first coined it in 2011, with its popularity surging on social media during the autumn of 2013.
According to Urban Dictionary, which initially introduced the term in 2011, cuffing season is confined to the fall and winter months, typically commencing towards the end of autumn and concluding before the arrival of spring. While this timeline is largely anecdotal and exceptions abound, it's a time when people tend to pair up before Thanksgiving and part ways after Valentine's Day.
Older data from Facebook even indicates that many individuals change their relationship status to "in a relationship" between October and February, only to revert to "single" come March. The advent of dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble has only served to amplify the phenomenon of cuffing season, making it more prevalent than ever before.
