Josué 9: El peligro de no consultar a Dios.

Veamos un episodio doloroso cuando los Israelitas fueron engañados por el pueblo cananeo.

Josué 9:11‭-‬19 RVA2015:
Por eso nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestra tierra nos hablaron diciendo: “Tomen en sus manos provisión para el camino, vayan al encuentro de ellos y díganles: ‘Nosotros somos sus siervos; por tanto, hagan alianza con nosotros’. Este pan nuestro estaba caliente cuando tomamos provisiones de nuestras casas para el camino, el día que salimos para venir a ustedes. He aquí que ahora ya está seco y mohoso. También estos odres estaban nuevos cuando los llenamos. He aquí que ahora ya están rotos. Y esta ropa nuestra y nuestras sandalias están ya viejas a causa del camino tan largo. Los hombres de Israel tomaron de sus provisiones, pero no consultaron al SEÑOR. Entonces Josué hizo paz con ellos, e hizo una alianza con ellos de conservarles la vida. Los jefes de la congregación también se lo juraron. Y sucedió que tres días después de haber hecho alianza con ellos, se enteraron de que eran sus vecinos y que habitaban en medio de ellos. Entonces los hijos de Israel partieron, y al tercer día llegaron a las ciudades de ellos. Sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot y Quiriat-jearim. Pero los hijos de Israel no los mataron, porque los jefes de la congregación les habían jurado por el SEÑOR Dios de Israel. Por eso toda la congregación murmuraba contra los jefes. Y todos los jefes respondieron a toda la congregación: —Nosotros les hemos jurado por el SEÑOR Dios de Israel. Por eso ahora no los podemos tocar.

Aquí vemos una gran lección dolorosa que tuvieron que aprender los israelitas. ¡Es la lección de consultar a Dios todo!
Los gabaonitas encontraron la forma para engañarles, haciéndose pasar por un pueblo muy lejano queriendo establecer tratos de paz con ellos.
Si Josué y los jefes de Israel hubieran primero consultado al Señor como venían haciéndolo en todo su caminar, no hubieran caído en la trampa del engaño.
Cuando leemos esto, podemos ver que fue una "novatada" que cometieron ellos; por haber actuado apresuradamente y que tal vez se dejaron llevar por la emoción al escuchar esas palabras lisonjeras que hablaban muy lindo del Dios de Israel y las obras majestuosas, o por verlos con compasión por la forma lastimera con que se presentaron, o por el placer de hacer tratados de paz con otras naciones lejanas.
Sea cual sea la razón, ninguna justificaba que ellos hubieran caído en la trampa y pusieran en riesgo a todo el pueblo y al plan divino de Dios.
Los gabaonitas se convirtieron de enemigos a protegidos. Al final, convivieron entre los israelitas haciendo trabajos menos atractivos como el cargar agua y leña para el templo de Dios.

Más adelante veremos cómo esto no le agradó a Dios y el gran problema que esto les trajo. Pero hoy quiero que reflexionemos en lo peligroso que es el no consultar al Señor nuestras acciones y decisiones.
Cuando estamos bajo emociones fuertes podemos lamentar cualquier palabra que digamos o acción que hagamos. Sea la compra de algo que nos va a traer mucho tiempo pagarlo a crédito, un viaje sin preparación, divorciarse, o casarse sin conocer bien a la persona, etc.
Pidamos a Dios y pongamos mucho en práctica el don de la prudencia.

Aunque todo problema tenga su solución y Dios nos ayude a salir de situaciones difíciles, las consecuencias siempre estarán ahí como cicatrices que nos recuerdan ese momento en el que desobedecimos y nos golpeamos fuertemente, dejando heridas lamentables.
Es inevitable cometer errores, pero sí podemos evitar muchos dolores de cabeza al tomar un tiempo prudente para clamar al Señor y escuchar su voz por medio de la oración y ayuno, hablando con nuestra pareja y escuchar su opinión y consejo, también la de un amigo sabio o de nuestros padres o del pastor, y tomando tiempo para pensar con la cabeza y no con las emociones, que usualmente no son buenas consejeras.

Joshua 9: The danger of not consulting God

Let's see a painful episode when the Israelites were deceived by the Canaanite people.

Joshua 9:11-19:
Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; now therefore, make a covenant with us.” ’ This bread of ours we took hot for our provision from our houses on the day we departed to come to you. But now look, it is dry and moldy. And these wineskins which we filled were new, and see, they are torn; and these our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”
Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.
And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them. Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim. But the children of Israel did not attack them, because the rulers of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation complained against the rulers.
Then all the rulers said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel; now therefore, we may not touch them.

Here we see a great painful lesson that the Israelites had to learn. It is the lesson of consulting God in everything!
The Gibeonites found a way to deceive them, posing as a very distant people wanting to establish peace deals with them.
If Joshua and the leaders of Israel had first consulted the Lord as they had been doing throughout their journey, they would not have fallen into the trap of deception.
When we read this, we can see that it was a "hazing" that they committed; for having acted hastily and that perhaps they were carried away by emotion upon hearing those flattering words that spoke very nicely of the God of Israel and the majestic works, or for seeing them with compassion for the pitiful way in which they presented themselves, or for the pleasure to make peace treaties with other distant nations.
Whatever the reason, none justified that they had fallen into the trap and put the entire people and God's divine plan at risk.
The Gibeonites were converted from enemies to protégés. In the end, they lived among the Israelites doing less attractive jobs like carrying water and firewood for God's temple.

We will see later how this did not please God and the great problem that this brought them. But today I want us to reflect on how dangerous it is not to consult the Lord about our actions and decisions.
When we are under strong emotions we may regret any word we say or action we do. Be it the purchase of something that is going to take us a long time to pay it on credit, a trip without preparation, getting divorced, or getting married without knowing the person well, etc.
Let's ask God and let's put into practice the gift of prudence.

Although every problem has its solution and God helps us to get out of difficult situations, the consequences will always be there as scars that remind us of that moment when we disobeyed and hit us hard, leaving unfortunate wounds.
It is inevitable to make mistakes, but we can avoid many headaches by taking a prudent time to cry out to the Lord and listen to His voice through prayer and fasting, talking with our partner and listening to their opinion and advice, also that of a wise friend or from our parents or from the pastor, and taking time to think with your head and not with your emotions, which are usually not good advisers.
