Operation Fast and Furious was a covert program launched by the ATF in 2009 to track the flow of illegal firearms from U.S. gun dealers to Mexican drug cartels, with the aim of dismantling cartel operations. Agents allowed over 2,000 firearms to be sold to suspected cartel middlemen, hoping to trace them to high-level traffickers.
