My personal experiences around kinship is related to my immediate family. It was traditionally a practice for Inuit to use kinship to address each other, instead of using their given names. The use of kinship was related to family terms, which Inuit call Tuqsurarniq. The use of kinship was a form of respect and also a way to create closeness between and within families. In my personal experiences, I have a number of names which were give to me. I grew up in relation to who I am within my family, but also how people relate to me through the names given to me. For example, my brothers call me sister, najakuluapik or najakuluk, but I have cousins who call me Anaanatsiaq, Grandmother, because my name Miali was the name of our Grandmother.
