Breve reflexión acerca de la la posesión en Marcos 1:21-28.

Demonic Possession

Many ancient and modern cultures believe in the existence of demons; Christianity is not the exception. In the small portion of the Gospel of Mark 1:21-28 demons are called unclean spirits.

We read:
21 And [Jesus and His disciples] went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

The first part of this portion of the Evangelium highlights that Jesus was teaching. Then, it moves to describe that a possessed man. Mark writes: I quote: “there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit” (v. 23). End of quote. This is a reference to demonic possession. But, what is possession?

In the book SVMMA DEMONIACA by J.A. Fortea, possession is defined as the phenomenon by which an evil spirit resides in a body and at certain times can speak and move through that body without the person being able to avoid it.
The evil spirit does not reside in the soul, the soul is in all circumstances still free and incapable of any possession. Only the body is susceptible to possession (p. 121).

The main purpose of the public ministry of Jesus is to teaching. Jesus teaches the truths of the Kingdom of heaven. The power to drive out demons is a sign of His divine authority over all created beings visible and invisible, good and malign. Only God has the power to control the influence of the evil one. The Scribes and all in the synagogue noted this authority of Jesus: “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

The main purpose of Jesus' public ministry is to teach. Jesus teaches the truths of the Kingdom of heaven. However, Jesus' power to expel demons is a sign of his divine authority. God has power and authority over all created beings visible and invisible, good and evil. Those in the synagogue noticed Jesus' authority: “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

Although this story seems distant in time, possession today, although very rare still exists. But we must also remember what we read in the book of Hebrews 13: 8, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today and forever."

Muchas culturas antiguas y modernas creen en la existencia de demonios; El cristianismo no es la excepción. En la pequeña porción del Evangelio de Marcos 1: 21-28 los demonios son llamados espíritus inmundos.

Ahi Leemos:

21 Y entraron en Capernaum; y los días de reposo, entrando en la sinagoga, enseñaba. 22 Y se admiraban de su doctrina, porque les enseñaba como quie tiene autoridad, y no como los escribas. 23 Pero había en la sinagoga de ellos un hombre con un espíritu inmundo, que dio voces, 24 diciendo, Ah! ¿Qué tienes con nosotros, Jesús Nazareno? ¿Has venido a destruirnos? Sé quién eres, el Santo de Dios. 25 Pero Jesús le reprendió, diciendo: ¡Cállate, y sal de él! 26 Y el espíritu inmundo, sacudiendole con violencia, y clamando a gran voz, salió de él. 27 Y todos estaban asombraron, de tal manera que discutíanentre si, diciendo: ¿Qué es esto? ¿Qué nueva doctrina es esta, que con autoridad manda aun a los espíritus inmundos, y le obedecen. 28 Y muy pronto se difundió su fama por toda la provincia alrededor de Galilea.

La primera parte de esta porción del Evangelio destaca que Jesús estaba enseñando. Enseguida se describe que "había en su sinagoga un hombre con un espíritu inmundo" (v. 23). Esta es una referencia a la posesión demoníaca. ¿Pero qué es la posesión?

En el libro SVMMA DEMONIACA DE J.A. Fortea, se define la posesión como el fenomeno por el que un espíritu maligno reside en un cuerpo y en determinados momentos puede hablar y moverse a través de ese cuerpo sin que la persona pueda evitarlo.
El espíritu maligno no reside en el alma, esta en toda circunstancia sigue siendo libre e incapaz de posesión alguna. Solo el cuerpo es susceptible de sufrir posesión (p. 121).

Pero, el propósito principal del ministerio público de Jesús fue enseñar. Jesús enseñó las verdades del Reino de los cielos. Sin embargo, el poder de Jesús para expulsar a los demonios es un signo de su autoridad divina. Dios tiene poder y autoridad sobre todos los seres creados visibles e invisibles, buenos y malignos. Los que estaban en la sinagoga notaron la autoridad de Jesús y se preguntaban: “¿Qué es esto? ¡Una nueva enseñanza con autoridad! Él ordena incluso a los espíritus inmundos, y ellos le obedecen.

Aunque esta historia parece lejana en el tiempo, la posesión hoy en día, aunque es muy rara todavía existe. Pero también debemos recordar lo que leemos en el libro de los Hebreos 13:8, “Jesucristo es el mismo ayer, y hoy y por los siglos.”
