The Expats Portugal team is delighted to share the news that it has officially become a Portuguese business, though still trading proudly as ‘Expats Portugal’, serving its 8,500+ members.

The online community-based website was originally set up in 2005 by Simon Pownall who bought a house in Portugal and wanted to help others avoid the pitfalls.

In 2019, Gerry Lawler, originally from Ireland, and Astrid Fernandes, originally from Australia, gave the site a new lease on life, and were joined in 2020 by Brit expat Carl Munson.

The new team have been keen to stay true to the original purpose of having a friendly community forum and place for Portugal’s expats and potential expats to “hang out”.

Based on this friendly and informal approach, Expats Portugal has recently responded to a huge surge in interest in moving to Portugal from people all over the world.

“Portugal boasts a relaxed lifestyle, affordable cost of living, amazing weather, beautiful coastlines and countryside and a welcoming atmosphere,” says Gerry Lawler who had originally based the company’s operations in the UK. “Having gone through the recent effects of Brexit and the pandemic, we are here for the long-term, and it’s only right we trade as a Portuguese entity.”

“We think we offer an amazing amount of free information and great value for money with a basic annual donation of 47 euros that gets our ‘Premium’ members a great range of discounts and perks on every kind of service they might need,” adds Astrid. “We are also pleased to say that we now pay tax here in the country that offers us so much.”

Expats Portugal has recently introduced ‘Ask our Expats’ and ‘Property Search’ services to complement its online offer, where prospective migrants can quiz established expats about location and lifestyle as well as secure their all-important, new dream home.
