The first episode of the Bollywood Cinema Club takes Otto Preminger's Laura and moves it to Mumbai. Himanshu Brahmbhatt's Rog, from Mahesh Bhatt's production house, stars Irrfan Khan as Inspector Uday Rathod, an insomniac who falls for Maya, a murdered model he knows only from her portrait and the men who talk about her. It tells the noir from the detective's side, and the question is how much of the 1944 film's argument about who gets to define a woman survives the trip.
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Cullen Gallagher (Pulp Serenade) talk the men who narrate Laura and a murder committed by male projection, Ilene Hamann's one and only film role, a detective who doesn't drown his insomnia in pills and liquor, English dubs against subtitles, Irrfan Khan's career cut short, and the McCarthy-era trouble that followed the novel's author.
