Jesus said "unless" your righteousness exceeds the righteuosness of the Scribes and Pharisees you will in no wise enter the Kingdom of heaven.The seriousness of this statement commands our attention to self-evaluation. Jesus turned the self-righteous legalistic theology of the Pharisees on it head exposing their inner motives. He removes their religious masks and exposed their hypocrisy and warned His disciples never to be like them.
