John Mathew Matthan's Sarfarosh puts Aamir Khan's ACP Ajay Singh Rathod on the trail of an arms-smuggling ring working the Rajasthan border, while he strikes up a friendship with Naseeruddin Shah's Pakistani ghazal singer, Gulfam Hassan. It's a cop picture built on the India-Pakistan conflict, released just before the Kargil War played out much the same way. Mukesh Rishi's Inspector Saleem, a Muslim officer who keeps having to prove his loyalty, gets some of the film's sharpest scenes. Is one of Indian cinema's most charismatic actors best served by a role with all the charisma stripped out?
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Yashar Pirasteh (Game of Bros) talk Partition and the Muhajir history behind Gulfam, a paper-thin romance with Sonali Bendre, good Jatin-Lalit songs in the wrong movie, sound effects that seem lifted from a fighting game, interrogation by gunshot next to a suspect's head and why so much Indian cinema lives on YouTube.
