Study Title: HomeBase: Enhancing mental wellness in public safety personnel families

We are inviting representatives of public safety sectors to take part in a research study. The overall purpose of this study is to understand and develop organizational supports, programs, policies and practices for public safety personnel families.
If you take part, a member of the research team will interview you for 60-90 minutes by phone, at a time convenient to you. The interview can also be split up into smaller 30 minute sessions to accommodate your schedule as required. The interview will be audio-recorded and later transcribed. There is a risk that some of the questions may upset you. If you feel upset after the interview, please call Telephone Aid Line Kingston (TALK) at 613-544-1771. Study results will help inform family-centered policy, programming, prevention, or interventions across public safety sectors. No member of the research team has any Conflicts of Interest to disclose.
Participation is voluntary. There are no direct benefits to you for participating. You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to. You can stop your participation at any time by telling the researcher(s) or hanging up the phone. You may withd from the study at any time, by contacting homebase@queensu.ca. You may request to have any records of data collected from your participation be destroyed, up until the time of publication.
Your confidentiality will be protected to the extent permitted by applicable laws. We will do this by replacing your name with a pseudonym in all publications and a study ID number in all study records. The study data will be stored on an encrypted hard drive on Queen’s University servers. The code file that links real names with pseudonyms and study ID numbers will be stored securely and separately from the data on an encrypted USB key. We will keep your data securely for at least five years per Queen’s University Policy, after which electronic files as well as the file with participant identifiers will be securely destroyed by the Primary Investigator. The code file identifying your pseudonym and study ID number will be destroyed five years after publications flowing from the data are completed. In addition to the lead Principal Investigator and core study team, a transcriber who has signed a Confidentiality Agreement will have access to the raw data. The Queen’s University Health Sciences and Affiliated Teaching Hospitals Research Ethics Board (HSREB) may require access to your study-related records to monitor the ethical conduct of the research.
We plan to publish the results of this study in academic journals and present them at conferences. In addition, the findings will be used to inform priority statements for public safety sectors. We will include quotes with no personally identifying information from the interviews when presenting the findings. We will never include any real names with quotes. We will do our best to make sure quotes do not identify participants. During the interview, please let me know if you say anything you do not want us to quote.

You have not waived any legal rights by consenting to participate in this study. This study has been reviewed for ethical compliance by the Queen’s University Health Sciences and Affiliated Teaching Hospitals Research Ethics Board.
