In this week’s episode, we’ll be unpacking and discussing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). You’ll hear a little about what an HSI is, from scholar-practitioners at HSIs and their experiences, defining servingness, and how this work is institutional.

Debrief Questions:
  • How would you define servingness for NIU?
  • How could you embed servingness practices in your department/college?
  • What are some ways you can engage students in this work?

About our guest speakers:

  • Marla Franco: Dr. Marla Franco who serves as the inaugural Vice President of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives at the University of Arizona and provides university-wide vision, strategy, and leadership to bring the designation to life in ways that matter most to students, employees, alumni, and the community at large. She is also founder of the AZ HSI Consortium, which aims to bring together the 20 HSIs across Arizona to develop a community of practice to engage collectively in professional development, support the exchange of evidence-based and culturally relevant practices, facilitate successful transfer of Latinx students to Arizona universities, and collaborate across HSIs when seeking funding opportunities and other important partnerships.  Overall, Dr. Franco has worked in higher education for nearly 25 years at public universities in California and Arizona, having served in various roles within academic and student affairs to champion greater college access and degree attainment among underserved and minoritized students. She is a published author, a first-generation college graduate, a proud mom of two teenagers, and an avid supporter of the Tucson community and beyond as she serves on several local and national boards and commissions. Dr. Franco leads strategically, courageously, and with a fierce passion for what she does.

  • Karla Silva: Dra. Karla Silva (she/ella) is a first-generation college graduate, Chicana, daughter to immigrants, mama, and scholar-practitioner with over ten years of experience in student affairs. She has spent her career working in the areas of access, equity, and inclusion. She currently serves as the Director, Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives at the University of Arizona (UA). In addition to her role, she also serves as an instructor for the UA College of Education and General Education. Dra.Silva received her doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Northern Arizona University. She is an active member of several professional organizations and holds leadership positions with the Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institution Educators and AZ HSI Consortium. Dra. Karla Silva's career and research reflects a deep commitment to higher education and a focus on supporting historically excluded communities, advancing research on HSIs, and advancing student success and support.

  • Jarett Lujan: Dr. Jarett Lujan is a higher education professional from Marfa, TX. Dr. Lujan is now an HSI scholar-practitioner focusing on the experiences of Latina/o/x students on HSI campuses and how these campuses should be intentionally serving these students. He previously served as the inaugural Director of HSI Initiatives at his alma mater, Texas Tech University (TTU). Currently, he leads institutional efforts to develop and communicate HSI-related grant opportunities to the TTU community. Beyond his work at TTU, Dr. Lujan is actively involved in broader efforts to support HSIs through his roles on the Texas Hispanic-Serving Institution Consortium Board and the Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institution Educators (AHSIE) Council. His commitment to this cause extends to his entrepreneurial venture as the Owner and CEO of Lift While You Climb Consulting LLC, where he works with other higher education institutions to enhance their HSI servingness and develop strong leadership practices.
