Joe Valachi was a low-ranking member of the Genovese crime family in the American Mafia who became infamous for being the first Mafia member to publicly acknowledge the existence of the organization. Born in 1904 in New York City, Valachi became involved in organized crime during the 1930s and rose to become a soldier in the Genovese family. His life took a dramatic turn when he was arrested in 1959 on narcotics charges and, fearing for his life after mistakenly killing a fellow inmate, decided to cooperate with the U.S. government.

In 1963, Valachi testified before the U.S. Senate in what became known as the Valachi Hearings, revealing the inner workings, structure, and rituals of the Mafia, including the secretive induction ceremony. His testimony was a turning point in the fight against organized crime, providing law enforcement with crucial information that led to numerous arrests and convictions. Valachi spent the remainder of his life in protective custody, living in fear of Mafia retribution until his death in 1971. His legacy is that of a key figure who helped expose and weaken the Mafia in America.
