The Juárez Cartel, also known as the Vicente Carrillo Fuentes Organization (VCFO), is a powerful and historically significant drug trafficking organization based in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. It emerged in the late 1980s from the remnants of the Guadalajara Cartel, with Amado Carrillo Fuentes, "El Señor de los Cielos" (The Lord of the Skies), at its helm. Under Amado's leadership, the cartel became one of the most dominant forces in the global drug trade, known for its innovative use of aircraft to transport massive quantities of drugs, primarily cocaine, from Colombia to the United States.
Amado's death in 1997 during a botched plastic surgery marked the beginning of the cartel's decline. His brother, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, took over, but the cartel faced increasing pressure from rival organizations, particularly the Sinaloa Cartel, and from Mexican and U.S. law enforcement. The ensuing violent turf war in Ciudad Juárez led to the city becoming one of the most dangerous places in the world during the late 2000s, with thousands of lives lost.
Despite its decline after Vicente's arrest in 2014, the Juárez Cartel remains active, though its influence and operations are now significantly diminished. The cartel's legacy is one of extreme violence, corruption, and profound impact on the people and history of Ciudad Juárez.
