Women in ancient Greece enjoyed limited freedom. Even though they are mostly remembered as mothers, wives, and daughters, they still feature very often in Greek inscriptions.

The text from this episode is a late-Hellenistic inscription from Karanis (North-East Fayyum, Lower Egypt). It is an epitaph for Lysandre, young woman who died at 20 before being able to marry, who laments her fate and the marriage that never was.

Details of the inscription: GVI 1680 = Bernand, Iscr. métr. 83. The English translation is from J. Rowlandson (ed.), “Women and Society in Greek and Roman Egypt”, Cambridge 1998 (p. 347).

This episode was written by Davide Massimo in collaboration with James Hua; reading by James Hua; soundtrack by Gilberto Bartoloni.
