In the meantime, while Flip was playing Amarah’s next big hit, Elman was down to the radio station Cutz 92 telling disc jockey Terrence Lewis the same story that he told Flip about Amarah shooting him in the leg. The story got more attention on Cutz 92 than it did Flip’s station WDJF. After it was heard on the radio, it was written in the city newspaper.
The bad publicity didn’t seem to bother Amarah much. She sometimes sat near a window at her favorite restaurant and thought about moving to another city.
Amarah also thought about how much DJ Flip was changing. He began to get into fights with Terrence Lewis. Sometimes he would leave the radio station with cuts and bruises. Terrence and his partner would try to gang Flip but Flip was stronger and bigger than both of them. The envy and the hate began to grow for DJ Flip and Amarah.
Late that evening just before the going down of the sun, Amarah went to visit DJ Flip. A sudden storm was also just about to arrive. DJ Flip let Amarah in, but he was not expecting her. He was sitting to his kitchen table working on a new art diary. In the dining room, he sat down to talk with Amarah and had forgotten all about his diary being opened on the kitchen table.
After a while, Flip went upstairs to use the bathroom, and Amarah saw that Flip had been studying his Bible. From the dining room, she could see that he had been writing in the kitchen. She wasn’t familiar with his home. Amarah thought that Flip had a very nice home. She walked to the doorway of the kitchen, and her eyes fell on a picture in Flip’s art diary that he drew of her. It nearly frightened her. It reminded Amarah of a dream she had of herself and Flip.
Suddenly the lights went out because of a terrible storm. Flip had came down the stairs.
Flip: Amarah! Where are you?
Amarah: I’m right here, Flip.
Flip and Amarah both found there way to the dining room coach.
Flip: I don’t like the dark. I’m out of oil for the candle light. I wasn’t prepared for this.
Amarah: Are you scared, Flip?
Flip: No, are you?
Amarah: No. I heard that radio story that Elman told you about how I shot him in the leg.
Flip: I should have never put that man on the air. I didn’t know you met Miss Grady. You’re pretty good with a gun.
Amarah: That doesn’t frighten you about me does it Flip?
Flip: No, I’m glad you know how to protect yourself. What scares me is you’re smart. Smart enough to leave a guy. I don’t know why you like me. I’ve seen you with guys better than me. I’m just an old DJ spinning records. I’ve seen you with guys with high paying jobs, with fancy cars & boats & yatchs.
Amarah: You said right Flip. They have jobs, but you know how to work for yourself, and you got your own business going, helping recording artist, and helping me. You’re just as good as any man. As far as those material things they got, that’s not what I’m looking for. Those things don’t impress me. Why come you like me?
Flip: I always fall for the things you say. I always think you’re pretty. When I was a boy, I had a crush on you. Now I’m a man, and … it’s ….it’s more than that now. I don’t like it when men try to degrade you & ruin your reputation. I’ll fight for you.
Amarah: Is that why I’ve been seeing all those cuts & bruises on you. You’ve been telling me it’s nothing.
Flip: It’s nothing.
Amarah: That’s okay. Don’t tell me. You don’t have to tell me. And I know who you have been fighting. I want get involved. I’ll let you handle it. I didn’t mean to see it, but I saw the picture you’ve been drawing of me. You never told me you could draw. That picture almost scared me.
Flip: Why did it almost scare you?
Amarah: It looks similar to a dream I had. I told you that you have a gift.
Flip: Sometimes I feel there is a deep connection between us. I never knew that you were writing that song that I played today. And that picture I drew, I started it a long time ago and just now trying to finish it. I know you’re the one for me. It’s a sign.
Amarah: What made you decide to start studying you’re Bible?
Flip: It’s where I go when I need answers.
Amarah: I admire that Flip. It’s the right place to go.
Flip: Like all men, I have a sinful nature. You don’t know all of my thoughts & feelings about you. My body is unsaved, but my heart is saved, and I
love you Amarah.
Amarah: I know how you feel. I love you too, but let’s continue to take our time.
Amarah & DJ Flip talked on through the storm & fell asleep in the dark in each other’s arms.
