mostra másThroughout the two podcast episodes, we have found that the term "fishery" itself implies management, fish capture, and consumption. This is why many economic and political interests converging in ICCAT meetings attempt to be reconciled, sometimes even at the expense of the species itself.
According to the latest ICCAT agreement reached in Egypt in October and November 2023, the catch limit set for the Blue Shark was established at 30 thousand tons annually. This represents a 23% reduction in captures of this species in the North Atlantic compared to the previous limit. Meanwhile, for the South Atlantic, the limits were set below 28 thousand tons annually, indicating a 4.2% reduction from the previous catch limit.
Are these measures enough to ensure the sustainability of the Blue Shark in a ten-year scenario? In this episode, we invite you to listen to Ali Hood's analysis, who also participated as an observer in the latest ICCAT meeting.
