Does the Monopoly Man wear a monocle? Did Nelson Mandela die in prison in the 1980s? And did a 1990s movie called *Shazaam* starring Sinbad as a genie ever exist? If you answered "yes" to any of these, you're wrong—but you're not alone. Millions of people share the same vivid, confident, and completely false memories. This is the Mandela Effect.

The term was coined in 2009 by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome after she discovered that she and many others falsely remembered Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s [citation:2][citation:6]. In reality, Mandela was released in 1990, became South Africa's president, and died in 2013 [citation:1][citation:2]. Since then, hundreds of other examples have surfaced: the Berenstain Bears remembered as "Berenstein," Darth Vader's line misquoted as "Luke, I am your father," and the infamous Sinbad genie movie that never existed [citation:1][citation:8][citation:12].

Psychologists explain the Mandela Effect through false memory—the brain's tendency to "fill in the blanks" with inaccurate information [citation:2][citation:4]. Memory is not a perfect recording; it is a reconstruction, shaped by expectations, social influence, and misinformation. Schema theory suggests we misremember details to align with our expectations, while confabulation occurs when the brain unconsciously fills gaps with invented information [citation:2][citation:4]. Source confusion and suggestibility further distort our recollections [citation:2][citation:8]. Some theorists propose more fanciful explanations, such as parallel universes or time travel, but these remain scientifically untestable [citation:4][citation:6].

This is the story of a phenomenon that challenges our understanding of memory, truth, and reality—and a reminder that our minds are not perfect recorders of the world.
