Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, discussions about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to power have intensified.

Unlike in the past , these recent calls for Jonathan’s return are majorly being driven by some PDP stakeholders who believe his experience and prior presidency could offer stability and effective leadership in the coming years.

The push for Jonathan's return is not new. As early as late 2020, discussions about his potential candidacy for the 2023 presidential elections began. Legal debates focused on the 1999 Constitution's Fourth Alteration (2017), with some interpreting it as barring Jonathan from seeking the presidency again, while others argued otherwise. Despite these legal debates, calls for his return to power continued, reflecting deeper political currents.

By April 2022, the discussion around Jonathan's candidacy had evolved further.

Now, as the 2027 elections approach, the renewed push for Jonathan’s return to power highlights the ongoing relevance of these debates and the strategic calculations of political actors.

Here, we discuss around this issue and ask,
what are the underlying motives of those advocating for Jonathan’s return?
