“I think structure is so deep in us… we put it even in stories we tell our friends or in emails we write. We want it. It’s how we create meaning. So I feel like sometimes coming at it from an analytical way is like denying your birthright — which is story structure.” — Greta Gerwig —
OBJECTIVE: To understand and build out the structure and series of events for your dramatic premise.
ADVICE: Structure is absurdly important in story. And because structure is so critical, you’ll find that almost every ‘story expert’ has their own system on how you should tackle it. This often leads to the paralysis of analysis for screenwriters as they read endless different systems and directives for structure.
EXERCISE: Since film is a visual medium, and screenwriting is the blueprint for film, we always want to focus on visualization first. So it’s time to envision your drama’s trailer.
The first thing that you need to do is go on YouTube and watch trailers for dramas that are close to the category and themes of your premise. In fact, watch as many drama movie trailers as you can. We’re particularly looking for those horrible types of trailers that give away too much information, because that is exactly what we’ll be asking you to create for your drama premise. We want a trailer in mind that gives away the twists and turns — and even the ending.
The trailer has laid out almost all of the major moments, beats, and visual elements of the film. This is what we want you to do.
This trailer you create will turn out to be the bones of your outline or extended synopsis/treatment for your screenplay before you start writing it.
