Way 1: Creativity

Welcome to Develop Your Drama Idea in 15 Ways! This program will provide you with exactly what you need to conceptualize and develop your drama movie ideas or creative work in the best ways possible. You’ll need to dedicate at least one hour per day. All you need to bring is an openness to learn, a passion for storytelling, and a love for the drama genre. You don’t even need to have a premise ready.

After these 15 ways, you’ll have an amazing understanding of the drama genre, a well- developed drama movie idea, and the necessary tools to write a great drama script. So let’s dive in! “For me, drama starts as a spew, a kind of explosion, and then you sculpt it from there.” — Robin Williams —OBJECTIVE: To get the creative juices flowing and build up some dramatic fodder for drama concepts.

ADVICE: Every great drama starts out with a compelling dramatic concept, and that concept affects not only the script that you write, but also how you pitch it, who you can pitch it to, and any other materials you might need to develop it. The concept will inform every decision you make — tone, atmosphere, story, characters, and the overall scope of the stories and intrigue you’ll be conjuring. The concept will also dictate who you will market the drama screenplay to. While you may already have interesting dramatic concepts in your mind — or drama screenplays you’ve written — it’s always best to explore those inquisitive depths of your imaginations for more. You can apply the new ones to the concept seeds already in your head, or you may find that what you have pales in comparison to what you’ve imagined after this below assignment. In any case, I’ve got you covered. Over the next couple of ways, I’ll walk you through the process of building out some concepts that you can then analyze and refine until you have at least a few solid drama ideas that you can develop and write as you move forward after these ways.

EXERCISE: To get yourself into the mood, let’s recall some of the great cinematic dramas. We use the greatness that has come before as inspiration and cinematic examples of greatness. As you create drama concepts, you want to also observe what has been done before, what you can do better, and what you can learn from some of the genre's classics. Let’s generate a quick list of some of our favorites. These don’t have to be your top drama flicks of all time, and the order doesn’t matter. Just jot down the first five that jump into your mind. Here are some quick examples that we’ll use in the ways to come:
  • THE POWER OF THE DOG
  • ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
  • PULP FICTION
  • CODA
  • DANCES WITH WOLVES
ASSIGNMENT: Every way you'll get a new assignment at the end of each lesson that will help educate you on aspects of the drama genre as you imagine concepts, develop screenplays, write and later market them. If you read through each lesson carefully, it'll be clear how to complete each assignment. The daily assignments will build off of each other, so make sure that you complete each one and don't fall behind. If you stick with me and do each of these to the best of your ability, you'll have a solid understanding of the genre and how to excel at it. So let's get started. For your first assignment, all you need to do is take some time to come up with at least 10 drama concepts. Only one sentence each. The trick here is not to think about this very much at all. Just write down the first 10 ideas that come to mind. They can be full fledged ideas, a simple but dramatic premise, a compelling character or setting — it doesn't matter. You won't be obligated to use any of these in your future drama scripts that you choose to write.

If you’re feeling stuck or can’t seem to think of anything, remember that you can get your ideas from a plethora of sources — news headlines, novels, television shows, movies, your life, etc. They can come from a scene or moment in a drama film that wasn’t fully explored. They can come from a single visual that entices the creative mind — a seed that continues to grow and grow until the writer is forced to finally put it to paper or screen. This is all just to practice coming up with story ideas quickly and without any pressure. If you already have a drama screenplay that you are going to apply these lessons to, we recommend that you still do this exercise — it will get your creative juices flowing. Have fun and we’ll see you next time!
