Indeed gold has done well so far in 2024. A recent report from Macquarie Commodity Strategy reveals not only has the metal's value benefited from a rough market, inflation and high interest rates; but there are deeper factors. The report states gold has risen thanks also in part to a broader risk-on sentiment in the metals markets.
Gold has been outperforming various asset classes and is trading on its reputation as a safe asset with no counterparty risk, rather than the opportunity cost associated with holding a zero-yield asset. In addition, risk assets have been supporting gold prices.
As for the U.S. money supply, it is doing something it has not done since the depression.
