When 9-year-old Morgan Geyser saw Peyton "Bella" Leutner drawing pictures of kitties in her notebook at Horning Middle School in Wakesha, Wisconsin, she knew they would be fast friends. The girls were inseparable and stayed best friends, even through Morgan's struggles with her undiagnosed childhood-onset schizophrenia. That is, until another girl, Anissa Weier, came along. Anissa lived in the same apartment complex as Morgan, and the two quickly became best friends. Bella hated Anissa.
One day, Anissa introduced Morgan to Creepypasta.com, a website for creative writing where users would post their own stories, most with horror or supernatural themes. The urban legend Anissa liked the most was that of The Slenderman, a soul-sucking, children-preying thin monster with unnaturally long arms and legs and tentacles. Morgan and Anissa soon became obsessed.
So obsessed, in fact, that they dreamed of running away to live with the fictional creature and, to do so, they would have to make a sacrifice so horrific and unbelievable, that all three girls' lives would be shattered forever.
