The SeedTime Project - The "Hybrid Revolution" of the early twentieth century brought improved seeds to America's farms, increasing yields as much as a hundred fold, ensuring abundance and security from that day to this. But those ample yields were so exciting that America's farmers and gardeners forgot about the older, open-pollinated seeds that they'd saved and planted out, year after year, century after century. A recent study by the United Nations showed that, of all of the crops grown in the United States in 1900, fully 90 percent were extinct by 1950. Yet these are the very plants that breeders need to make new hybrids to face new challenges here and around the world. The SeedTime Project was founded in 1993 by best-selling author Kevin Orlin Johnson, Ph.D., to encourage the identification, preservation, and propagation of America's surviving heritage plants of all kinds.
