His journey from a troubled youth to baseball legend is a testament to the power of talent, perseverance, and larger-than-life charisma.
Ruth's early life was far from easy. Born to working-class parents, he was one of eight children, though only he and his sister Mamie survived infancy. His parents struggled to manage him, and at the age of seven, they sent him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory and orphanage. It was here, under the guidance of Brother Matthias Boutlier, that Ruth discovered his passion and talent for baseball.
The young Ruth quickly excelled at the game, playing as both a pitcher and a powerful left-handed hitter. His skills caught the attention of Jack Dunn, owner of the Baltimore Orioles, who signed Ruth to his first professional contract in 1914. It was during this time that Ruth acquired his famous nickname "Babe," as the older players referred to him as "Dunn's baby."
Ruth's talents were undeniable, and he was soon sold to the Boston Red Sox. He began his major league career primarily as a pitcher, and a formidable one at that. However, it was his hitting prowess that would ultimately define his legacy. In 1919, in his last season with the Red Sox, Ruth hit an unprecedented 29 home runs, a record at the time.
The following year marked a turning point in baseball history. The Red Sox sold Ruth to the New York Yankees for $100,000, a staggering sum at the time. This transaction would later be dubbed the "Curse of the Bambino," as the Red Sox wouldn't win another World Series for 86 years.

Perhaps most impressively, he was an excellent pitcher before becoming a full-time outfielder, winning 94 games and posting a 2.28 earned run average over his career.
The end of Ruth's playing career was bittersweet. After a brief stint with the Boston Braves in 1935, he retired from baseball. His dream of becoming a manager never materialized, as many team owners feared his wild lifestyle would be a poor influence on younger players.
In his later years, Ruth struggled with his health. He was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 1946 and underwent experimental treatments. Despite his illness, he made one last appearance at Yankee Stadium in 1948, donning his old uniform to bid farewell to the fans who had cheered him for so long.
Babe Ruth passed away on August 16, 1948, at the age of 53. His death was mourned nationwide, and thousands of fans paid their respects as his body lay in state at Yankee Stadium. Ruth's impact on baseball and American culture cannot be overstated. He transformed the game, setting records that would stand for decades and inspiring generations of players who followed.
