What is the point of a publication if it doesn’t spark a bit of conversation? We couldn’t help but take Lewis Carroll’s advice by getting curiouser and curiouser about what it means to build a literary community from scratch. Looking back at this semester, we consider what went well, what could have gone better, and what lessons we learned along the way—and why we almost didn’t make it to print! Co-hosts Katherine Peach and Tobias Lentz speak in the studio (for the first time!) with BackMatter Managing Editor Michaela Keil about the burden of true genius—and why anyone in this role needs to be prepared to do it all.
We also hear from Jon Baskin, founding editor of The Point and Associate Director of Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism at the New School, and many more.

In this episode, we are focusing on a quote from Alice in Wonderland, not necessarily from the book by Lewis Carroll, but from the 1951 Disney movie: “I was just giving myself some good advice.” And we received a lot of great advice that we are sharing with you, including from the impeccable Kayla Romberger, who has worked in the independent publishing world for many years and runs an art bookstore—dedicated mostly to selling independently published books or short-run publications on art, design, and theory.
And then we'll also hear from Rachel Rosenfelt, Founding Editor of The New Inquiry, last year's BackMatter Editor in Chief Miko Yoshida, and Jon Baskin, who started a magazine called The Point and is our fearless leader this semester alongside Kayla.

First, they talk to the founder of The New Inquiry, and the program that hosts BackMatter magazine, Rachel Rosenfelt, who answers the question: Is it possible to create a publication through the power of collective belief?
