The 1968 Song Vs the 1978 Movie (really!)
(It's one of our favorite episodes from the past!) The song was written by Tom T. Hall and performed by country singer Jeannie C. Riley in 1968. The story about a “widowed bride” who is slut-shamed by her daughter’s junior high school PTA (Parents Teachers Advisory) and gives a takedown at a meeting that is spectacular in its shade and incisiveness was one of the first feminist anthems and managed to become a number one hit in the U.S. on both the pop and country charts. (Past episode, Dolly Parton did the same in 1980 for 9 to 5!)
The 1978 movie is an R-rated cuckoo bananas production starring Barbara Eden (a stone-cold fox!) as Stella Johnson, who exacts a Porky’s style revenge on the local yokels who dare to take her on. She is also wooed by an equally sexy Ronny Cox and is teamed up with Nanette Fabray in this film that played in drive-in theaters in 1978 and made millions. It features nudity, wrap dresses, elephants, revenge porn, makeovers, and a helicopter proposal. So, between the song and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!

The 1937 Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 2022 Kenneth Branagh film. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_on_the_Nilehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_on_the_Nile has long been a fan favorite, combining romance, betrayal, and murder aboard a glamorous steamer cruising the Nile River. In 2022, director https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Branagh brought the classic mystery back to the big screen with an all-star cast and a modern flair. But how faithful is this adaptation to the original 1937 novel?
Branagh (who returns as Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot) updates the cast of characters from the source material and discusses the racial politics of the time more. The Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 1982 Film
Agatha Christie's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_Under_the_Sun_(1982_film) (1941) is a masterclass in misdirection and suspense. The 1982 film adaptation, directed by Guy Hamilton and featuring Peter Ustinov as https://www.agathachristie.com/characters/hercule-poirot, transforms the story into a glamorous whodunit set in a sun-soaked Mediterranean locale. The 1968 Children’s Sci-Fi Novel Vs the 1975 Disney Classic
If you grew up watching Disney movies or browsing old-school sci-fi paperbacks, chances are https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_to_Witch_Mountain_(1975_film)is somewhere in your memory. But did you know the 1975 Disney movie is very different from the 1968 novel it’s based on? Let’s take a look at how https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Keybook compares to its big-screen adaptation. Alexander Key’s Escape to Witch Mountain is a surprisingly serious story for a children's book. It follows orphaned siblings Tony and Tia, who possess strange psychic abilities — Tony can move objects with his harmonica music, and Tia communicates with animals and speaks telepathically. As they dodge sinister adults who want to exploit them, they slowly uncover the truth: they're aliens stranded on Earth. The book delves into deeper themes, including prejudice, the fear of outsiders, and the desperate search for a sense of belonging.
There is a strong sense of melancholy running through the story, and while the ending offers hope, it is also mysterious and bittersweet. It feels less like a fairy tale and more like a poignant sci-fi fable. The 1975 Disney adaptation is much lighter, precisely what you’d expect from a family-friendly studio in the '70s. The Taming of the Shrew & the 1999 Heath Ledger Film

In both works, the plot revolves around two sisters—one desirable and another perceived as problematic. In The Taming of the Shrew, the younger, more attractive Bianca cannot marry until her older, strong-willed sister, Katherina, finds a husband. Similarly, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford can only date if her rebellious, sharp-tongued sister, Kat, does too. The 1957 Memoir Vs. the 1962 Movie
“Musicals in March!”
The Margos celebrate another “Musicals in March” episode with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gypsy_(musical). https://www.amazon.com/Gypsy-Memoir-Rose-Lee/dp/1883319951tells her real-life story of growing up in vaudeville and burlesque under the domineering influence of her mother, https://www.historylink.org/file/5686. It paints a detailed picture of her childhood alongside her more naturally talented younger sister, June (later June Havoc), and how Gypsy (born https://www.historylink.org/file/5686) eventually became the most famous burlesque performer of her time. The book is witty and self-deprecating and offers an unvarnished yet entertaining look at her complex relationship with her mother.
The movie Gypsy is based on the successful 1959 Broadway musical by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jule_Styne, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Sondheim, and https://www.masterworksbroadway.com/artist/arthur-laurents/, rather than directly on the memoir. It follows the same structure as the stage show, focusing on Rose Hovick’s relentless push to make her daughters stars, culminating in Gypsy’s rise to fame. However, because it was a Hollywood film, it softened some of the grittier aspects of Gypsy’s story.

The 2004 Musical Vs. the 2024 Movie
"Musicals in March"
The "Wicked" movie is based on https://gregorymaguire.com/’s novel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_(Maguire_novel) the book (for the play) was written by https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0392848/ with music and lyrics byhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Schwartz. The show had its initial tryout in San Francisco in 2003 before moving to Broadway, where it has enjoyed a successful two-decade run despite receiving mixed reviews.

Part One concludes with the iconic song "Defying Gravity," setting the stage for Part Two, which explores the consequences of Elphaba’s rebellion.
