In today's discussion, we'll explore why all startups should use Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). I'll share my recent consultation with a startup fintech CEO struggling to address underperformance among his senior team members. These individuals had agreements for equity in the startup at an agreed-upon trigger date, but the CEO hadn't defined the performance he expected from them.
Performance Improvement Plans are essential for supervisors and direct reports to address and resolve performance issues. As a startup leader, you should implement PIPs with all your employees from day one.

In the interview, McKeown and I discuss how visionary heroic leaders like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerburg, and Elon Musk foster leadership environments where employees develop a syndrome McKeown calls "learned helplessness." In these cases, employees never reach their true potential because Hero Leaders swoop in and save the day before these employees can learn how to succeed. McKeown points to false "Urgency" as the primary reason why Heroic leaders exist. If you can eliminate Urgency, then a new type of leader can emerge, the Self Evolved Leader.

Don Jones is a self-taught technology professional, starting as a night-shift AS/400 operator. He grew into tech leadership, and for over a decade as a freelance writer, speaker, and classroom teacher. Today he’s a Vice President for a major technology skills management firm. Don Jones’ formal education ended with his four-year aircraft mechanic apprenticeship. For everything else, he’s relied on experience, self-learning, and a massive amount of support from past and current bosses, leaders, and mentors.
Initially, Jones thought that he would never become a technologist. He was told in high school because he did not plan to attend college that he would not be successful in this field.
