10 SEP. 2026 · The Enneagram and the Way Back to Ourselves
Enneagram Series, Part 1
What if the thing you’ve spent your life searching for was never actually missing?
Before we had language for personality, before we learned how to earn belonging or protect ourselves from pain, there was already a self there.
In Part One of this ten-part exploration of the Enneagram, Patria begins with lightning bugs, a little backyard stream, and a childhood experience of wonder—a time before she knew to question whether she was enough.
Somewhere along the way, something changed. The world began to feel as though something was missing. Then life felt as though something was missing. Eventually, she felt like the thing that was missing something.
And so began the search.
Years later, that search led Patria to the Enneagram.
After nearly nine years of study, professional typing, teachers, coaches, mistyping and retyping, she eventually discovered that she wasn’t really searching for the right number. She was searching for herself.
This series isn’t primarily about learning nine personality types. It’s about learning to recognize the patterns through which we organize our experience: what captures our attention, the meaning we make of what we see, and the strategies we developed to find love, safety, belonging and significance.
Patria introduces three ideas that will guide the journey:
The Holy Idea — a glimpse of reality and ourselves before personality obscures our vision
The Wound — what happened, and how we were affected by what happened
The Strategy — the intelligent adaptations we developed in response
Those strategies aren’t evidence that something is wrong with us. Many of them helped us survive, belong, achieve, connect and create.
The trouble begins when a strategy becomes so familiar that we mistake it for who we are. Through her own long and winding journey toward recognizing herself as a Type Four, Patria explores what happens when a strategy becomes nearly invisible to the person using it.
What if envy doesn’t look like envy?
What if it becomes effort, achievement, searching and creating?
What if intuition—a genuine gift—slowly becomes an assignment to notice what is missing and do something about it?
And what happens when the very capacities that helped us navigate life begin narrowing what we’re able to see?
But the Enneagram isn’t here to put us in a box.
It’s here to help us see the pattern.
Because a pattern we cannot see feels like identity.
A pattern we can see becomes something we can relate to.
We can begin noticing:
What has my attention?
What meaning am I making of what I see?
And what am I compelled to do next because of that meaning?
That small space between attention, interpretation and action is where choice begins.
And choice makes freedom possible—not freedom from being ourselves, but greater freedom to be ourselves.
In this episode:
- Why the Enneagram is more than a personality test
- How attention, interpretation and motivation create our patterns
- The relationship between wound, strategy and identity
- Why our greatest adaptations can become difficult to distinguish from who we are
- How Patria’s own experience of Type Four changed her understanding of envy, intuition and what’s “missing”
- Why gratitude can widen attention without denying pain
- How awareness, discernment and choice can help us recover parts of ourselves we’ve learned to leave behind
Before we begin exploring the nine types, Patria offers one invitation:
Don’t fix your pattern. Notice it.
What are you noticing?
What meaning are you assigning to what you see?
What do you find yourself wanting to do next?
And perhaps, underneath all of that:
What part of you might be waiting to be welcomed home?
Because maybe healing isn’t finally becoming good enough to come home.
Maybe we don’t have to solve ourselves before we’re allowed to be here.
Maybe the front door was never locked. If this episode resonates with you, follow or subscribe to Echoes and Edges on your favorite podcast platform, leave a five-star review, and share with a friend who might need a gentle invitation to self-understanding.
