11 OCT. 2022 · Christianity arrived in Finland in the late Middle Ages but witch hunts in fact began in Scandinavia during the time when they were already fading in America and middle Europe. In Sweden, Finland, and Estonia, witch hunts first spread in the coastal areas. In Finland, they began on the island of Åland. An Island is an excellent place for this type of mass hysteria to begin because it is a closed community and not that many are willing to stand up against the authority figures.

4 OCT. 2022 · In Finnish folklore, väki is the energy that flows in every living being. It is the mana, the chi, the force. There is väki in the animals, in people and in nature. In this context when a Finnish person was a practitioner of witchcraft/shamanism, they, in fact, worked with the väki and learned how to control it.

According to the legends bugs were created in the underworld, from the relationship between the spirits of pain and misfortune. In folklore, Krampus is a half-man, half-goat and during the day of St Nicholas, he punishes those who have behaved badly and gives presents to those who have behaved well.

9 SEP. 2022 · In Finnish mythology goddesses have very important role. Mielikki is the goddess of the woodlands and animals. Louhi is the goddess of shamanism and witchcraft. Vellamo rules the seas and the water areas. Akka is the nurturing mother earth. Then there are nature spirits, most of them female and they keep the nature in balance.
